Floske Weehuizen (Dutch Association of Insurers): "Smarter cars? The driver makes the difference!"

Floske Weehuizen is a program manager and policy advisor for Mobility at the Dutch Association of Insurers and a member of the ADAS Kernteam. Despite the fact that her own car only has one driver-assistance system ("Those beeps while reversing can be quite useful sometimes!"), she is passionately committed to further improving the safe use of ADAS.

"For insurers, safety is a core value. Road safety is a societal priority," says Weehuizen. "We see this reflected not only in our members, but also in what we do as a trade association. That's why we play an active role in organizations like the Road Safety Coalition and the ADAS Alliance. After all, together we form an ecosystem where we can significantly strengthen each other. And it's helpful to organize this together."

ADAS matter because driver assistance systems make traffic safer – as shown by several studies to research, including that of the Dutch Association of Insurers. “Connect that insight to the worrying casualty figures, which, according to a bleak future scenario from SWOV, will unfortunately continue to rise. Then you know that ADAS can make a positive contribution to this, in addition to all the other necessary measures."

Are ADAS always safer and does this prompt every driver to choose a car with driver assistance systems? That's not the case yet. Opinions on ADAS are divided. This is evident from other research That about 60 percent of people believe that ADAS makes traffic safer. But slightly less than half actually feel safer. Moreover, we know that not every driver assistance system contributes equally to safety. In short, there is still much to be gained in further capitalizing on the positive effects of ADAS.

And that's precisely what the ADAS Alliance focuses on, and what we, as insurers, want to contribute to: improving the safe use of ADAS. Because no matter how great the technology is and how much all the collaborating parties facilitate, the driver is the final—and most important—link. That's why Weehuizen addresses the driver directly: "Do you know which ADAS are in your car, what they do, and how they work? Check your car, expand your knowledge, and contribute to greater road safety!"
