Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) becomes mandatory

The ADAS Alliance views making the Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) driver assistance system mandatory as an important step towards a safe future on the roads. Vulnerable road users, such as cyclists and pedestrians, account for a large proportion of traffic casualties in the Netherlands. It is expected that AEB will enable serious accidents to be prevented more frequently or that they will occur with less impact.

What exactly is going to change?

  • All newly registered cars will be from July 7, 2026 mandatory equipped with an emergency brake assist;
  • The system detects not only other vehicles, but also cyclists and pedestrians;
  • Existing cars do not need to be modified or converted.

What does AEB do?

Using cameras, radar, and software, AEB continuously monitors the vehicle's surroundings. When a collision is imminent – and the driver does not react or reacts insufficiently – the system will brake automatically. This can significantly reduce the severity of the impact, or in some situations, prevent it entirely.

Important: AEB supports, but does not replace the driver.

Although AEB is an important safety feature, the driver always remains responsible for performing the driving task. The system is designed as a safety net, so the driver must remain attentive and brake at all times.
